No federal holiday status
April 6, 2026 marks Easter Monday, the final day of the Easter weekend. While the holiday is widely observed in countries such as Canada and Australia, it is not recognized as a federal holiday in the United States.
That means federal agencies are operating under normal schedules, except for offices affected by the ongoing partial government shutdown. The next federally recognized holiday on the calendar is Memorial Day on May 25. According to the U.S. Office of Personnel Management, there are 11 federal holidays scheduled for 2026.
Stock markets and banks
U.S. financial markets are open. The New York Stock Exchange and Nasdaq do not observe Easter Monday as a holiday, so trading is proceeding as usual.
Most major banks, including JPMorgan Chase, Bank of America, Wells Fargo and Citibank, are also open. ATMs are operating normally, though some machines may need replenishment following the long holiday weekend.
Mail and delivery services
The United States Postal Service is delivering mail and operating retail branches on its standard schedule. Private carriers such as UPS and FedEx are also running normal pickup and delivery services.
Schools and government offices
Easter Monday is not recognized as a state holiday in any U.S. state. As a result, state-run offices such as Departments of Motor Vehicles are open.
Most public schools are in session unless the date coincides with scheduled spring break. Private and parochial schools generally remain open as well, though individual institutions may vary.
Retail, restaurants and pharmacies
For retailers and restaurants, Easter Monday functions as a typical business day. Big-box stores such as Walmart, Costco, Target, Best Buy, Kohl’s and Sam’s Club are open. Grocery chains including Kroger, Safeway, Trader Joe’s, Whole Foods and Aldi are also operating as usual.
National restaurant chains such as McDonald’s, Starbucks, Chipotle, Burger King, Taco Bell and Subway are serving customers on regular hours.
Pharmacies, including CVS and Walgreens locations, are open under standard schedules.
Global considerations
Although the United States does not observe Easter Monday as a public holiday, investors and businesses should be aware that many international markets are closed. That can affect global trading volume and cross-border transactions.
Domestically, however, April 6 is treated as a normal working day for financial markets, retailers, banks and government offices.
